WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. (WXYZ) — It’s officers versus kids in West Bloomfield. The weapon on choice: water balloons.

Police officers and dozens of children were battling it out Drake Sports Park near West Maple Road. Twelve West Bloomfield police officers were at war with dozens of kids ages 10 to 15. In total 2,000 water balloons were thrown.

This is the first time West Bloomfield police are hosting an event like this.

Officers used sling shots and shields. Kids said they are having a great time. Police were having a lot of fun too. They started the event throwing water balloons at Deputy Chief Curtis Lawson.

He said he wanted this event to be used as a way to bridge the gap in the community and show their young residents in West Bloomfield that they are fun and friendly.

All the officers were dressed in uniform but they were volunteering for this event.

Deputy Chief Lawson said, “We did not come up with the idea ourselves, we actually stole the idea from a department out of state. I had a sergeant that came to us, ‘wouldn’t it be a cool idea?’ And I said ‘let’s do it.’”

At the end, everyone helped picked up remnants of the balloons.

Police are already considering having another water balloon fight next year and possibly allowing more participants.
