Workers at the Arbor Hills Landfill in Northville are on strike. They are protesting on Napier near Six Mile Road.
Communications manager of Operating Engineers 324 Dan McKernan said, "Striking is always a last resort."
The workers walked off the job after they say negotiations have come to a halt between them and the landfill's owner, Advanced Disposal.
"To be on even par with other landfills in the area, in regards to wages, benefits, and working conditions within the landfill itself."
The workers unionized last year and have not come to an agreement on a contract.
"We are hoping that through our actions out here, they come back to the bargaining table and we can hammer out a contact relatively quickly," he said.
Their protests are slowing down garbage trucks from entering and exiting, but they say residents dropping off their trash will not affected.
"We are not impeding their entry and exit at all. We just want to make them aware of the conditions here at the landfill."
Mike John supports the strikers.
"These guys work their.... they work hard. They deserve a pension, so I just wanted to stand behind them," he said.
Representatives of Advanced Disposal say they are disappointed the workers decided to strike and feel their contract is a fair one.
Joe Kohn is the Community Relations Manager for Advanced Disposal.
He explained, "We have an offer on the table. We have an invitation for them to come and talk to us. And at the end of the day, we want our workers back to work because we value them."
Both sides can agree, they want a resolution as soon as possible.
