Lake effect snowfall dumped between five and eight inches of snow in areas of St. Clair County and Sanilac County on Monday.

Several spin-outs were reported and eastbound I-69 was closed at Taylor Road for some time after an accident involving a semi-truck that resulted in a fuel spill.

Public school students in the Crowell-Lexington and Carsonville-Port Sanilac districts were dismissed early Monday because of the snow and hazardous travel conditions.

Enough of the fluffy snow fell for George Hopkins to get to work clearing sidewalks for customers of some of the businesses in downtown Port Huron.

"We salt 'em, make sure that they can get in and out of their cars okay," Hopkins said. He works for Clean Cut and said he's been waiting for the snow to fall.

"This is only our second time out this season so far so I'm hoping for a little bit more," Hopkins said.

The first snowfall of significance in the new year brought additional customers into Gill-Roy's Hardware. Store manager Barry Shaver said they're stocked with supplies.

"Today its been phenomenal," Hopkins said. "Customers have been coming in, salt's going out the door really well and interest in shovels as well as salt, snow blowers. There's some interest in those as well."
