US Coast Guard clears Fort Gratiot HAZMAT incident

ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Mich., (WXYZ) - The U.S. Coast Guard confirms they have cleared the scene of a hazardous materials incident at a beach on the Fort Gratiot area, north of Port Huron.

Police were called to the area at about 9:30 a.m. on a report of a suspicious device. The scene was cleared just after 2:00 pm.

On arrival, the Fort Gratiot Fire Department determined the device was a Canadian water marking device, which contains phosphorus.

The beach area was cordoned off while HAZMAT teams were called to the scene.

The U.S. Coast Guard also assisted in marking a safety zone in the adjoining waters.
