Michigan State Police are asking for the public's help to find a missing 14-year-old who may be in danger.

Shanija Christionna Payne was last seen in the 1200 block of Lexington Parkway in Ypsilanti Township at around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Officials say that when Payne failed to return home her biological mother and grandmother received a group tax demanding a ransom for her safe return.

All attempts to contact or locate her since then have been unsuccessful.

Shanija Payne is 5'8" tall and weighs about 240 pounds. She has black hair that is pulled back into two braided pony tails, brown eyes and no known unique identifying remarks. She was wearing a black jacket, camouflage pattern shirt, black pants and black shoes.

Anyone with information about her current location is asked to call the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office at 734-994-2911.
