The Washtenaw County sheriff and U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell are hosting a discussion at Eastern Michigan University about race, poverty and community policing.

The event is from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the school's Student Center in Ypsilanti.

Organizers say Thursday's meeting follows events in Baton Rouge, Dallas and Minnesota.

Alton Sterling, a black man, was fatally shot during a scuffle with white police officers July 5 in Baton Rouge. Philando Castile, who also is black, was fatally shot the next day by an officer outside St. Paul, Minnesota.

Five Dallas officers were killed and nine wounded July 7 by a gunman during a protest of Sterling's and Castile's deaths. Three officers in Baton Rouge were slain and three wounded Sunday by another gunman.

Both gunmen were killed.
