DEARBORN, Mich. (WXYZ-TV) — Michigan State Police arrested an 18-year-old carjacking suspect Wednesday night on Detroit's west side, after a short pursuit from a gas station near Joy and Livernois.

According to MSP, Dearborn Police reported a woman was carjacked at gunpoint from her garage around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Tireman and Wyoming; she was reportedly returning from the casino when a man appeared with a pistol and look off in her white 2018 Jeep Compass.

"They put out to be on the look out for this white colored jeep," said Lt. Mike Shaw with Michigan State Police.

State Troopers happened to be nearby a gas station on Joy and Livernois when they spotted the vehicle approximately 30 minutes later.

“As the troopers kind of started to go over and investigate that vehicle, kind of made eye contact with the suspect that was in the vehicle," Lt. Shaw said.

Seemingly spooked, the 18-year-old suspect took off, and state police followed.

Within about a minute, troopers cornered the man and disabled the jeep at Cobb and Epworth on Detroit's west side, about two and a half miles from where everything started in Dearborn.

“This is exactly the way these pursuits are supposed to work, as the troopers were able to get on that vehicle and use that technique and stop that so nobody was hurt," Lt. Shaw told Action News.

The 18-year-old suspected was arrested without incident. State Police used K9s in an attempt to recover a gun, but have not located it.

Formal charges against the suspect are pending.
