The state is calling it a critical shortage. We are weeks into the school year, and some school districts still don’t have enough school bus drivers.

It has left some districts struggling to get all their children to school on time.

A letter was sent home by the Garden City Superintendent this week apologizing to parents as the district is struggling to get all kids to school on time due to the shortage

It is an issue many districts across the state are dealing with.

One reason for the shortage is the booming economy.

“Right now with the economy bouncing back and there being competitive job openings in transportation in local industry, we have lost some drivers to local industry,” said Derek Fisher, Garden City Public Schools Superintendent.

Superintendent Fisher is hoping people who want to make a difference in the lives of children take on the rewarding job.

“They are certainly recognized for the work they do and the service they provide to our students providing transportation,” said Fisher.

The district is planning a job fair next week to try to find more bus driver candidates.
