"I've run ads in the paper under lost dogs ever since he's been gone," said Debi Petranck who arrived in Dearborn Tuesday afternoon to pick up her long lost dog, Zeus.

Petranck, who is from Ocala, Florida, drove to pick up Zeus after getting a call from the Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit, a non-profit rescue that operates the Dearborn Animal Shelter.

Zeus was found in the Dearborn area about a week ago after he jumped out of the vehicle of the man who has had him since August 2014.

Elaine Greene, Executive Director of Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit, says some children in the Ocala area reportedly found Zeus and offered the dog to the man who soon drove to Michigan to live in the Dearborn area.

The man reportedly said that the dog was hit by a car a few weeks ago. Sometime after that, the man reportedly said that the dog jumped out of the window of his parked vehicle.

The dog was brought into the shelter as a stray.

The man came looking for the dog at the Dearborn Animal Shelter and while they acknowledged they had the dog, they also informed him that the dog was from Florida and needed to be returned to his owner.

Greene says Zeus's story highlights the importance of a microchip for your pets and making sure the contact information is up to date with the microchip company.
