The FBI says a flight attendant started - and extinguished - a fire on a flight from Dallas to Detroit. They say the fire led to an emergency landing at Detroit Metro Airport.
That flight attendant, identified as Johnathan Tafoya-Montano, was arrested Tuesday, the FBI said.
He was allegedly working as a flight attendant when he set a fire in the rear restroom of an American Airlines plane flying from Dallas to Detroit on February 1, 2016.
According to a criminal complaint, Montano later admitted to investigators that he intentionally set fire to paper towels with a lighter before extinguishing the flames. Meanwhile, the plane's captain was granted emergency status as his flight approached DTW. The plane landed safely and no one was injured.
"Mr. Tafoya-Montano has been charged with 'Destruction of Aircraft or Aircraft Facilities' and 'False Statements or Entries Generally,'" the FBI said Wednesday.
The FBI says Tafoya-Montano was released on bond after a hearing. His release came with conditions. One of those prohibits him from flying without permission of the court.
