WESTLAND, Mich. (WXYZ) — Fire investigators are looking into what caused a fire that destroyed six SMART buses Monday morning.

The buses are diesel vehicles, so they are plugged in during the winter to keep the combustion chamber and glow plugs warm enough for ignition.

The Nankin Transit Commission says the preliminary belief is one of those plugs led to the fire.

The buses are used to help shuttle people over age 55 and people with disabilities who live in the cities of Wayne, Westland, Inkster, Garden City, and Canton to medical appointments and work.

The Nankin Transit Commission said it has reached out to SMART for replacement buses to help them continue to operate.

They do not expect any interruptions in service.
