One segment of the job market remains robust: skilled trades. Their problem is a shortage of qualified workers.

The fix can start in high school.

Help wanted signs are up in businesses throughout metro Detroit including in manufacturing. It continues to be the intention of the governor to get more students interested.

Most high schools offer so-called shop classes.

But at Flat Rock High School, the students make award-winning projects and start lifetime careers.

One is a young lady who’s been working in her chosen field for years, started right here in high school.

These students knew the governor was coming, and Jared Lambrix got busy with a sign of the times.

It became a great photo op for the student, teacher, Flat Rock High School and a new item for the governor’s office.

The governor says help wanted postings only tell part of the story.  Each posting is usually for more than one of the same positions, like welders.

As for that happy student, Jared Lambrix, he has a job with a company right here in Detroit because of what you just saw he could do on the high school level.
