HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (WXYZ) — Jack White is going to bat for history. He played a charity baseball game on Thursday to raise money for the historic Hamtramck Stadium on Dan Street in Hamtramck.
The stadium was built in 1930 for the Detroit Stars of the Negro National League, and now it's one of just a handful of remaining Negro League-era ballparks left in existence.
“It tells this amazing story that some of the greatest athletes were not allowed to play against the major leaguers. They had to have their own league and what a shame that was,” said White.
White has donated money and called on others to do the same to preserve it.
“You always have to look back at where you once were and this stadium is a testament to that. A giant monument we need to recognize and not let it fall apart,” said White.
Some admit they came out because they are fans of his bands, the White Strips, the Raconteurs - or just generally Jack White.
They all left with an appreciation of this field’s history.
The game comes as White prepares for two performances with the Raconteurs at the Masonic Temple in Detroit.
