The Westland man facing felony charges in a road rage incident earlier this week says he was wrongly accused and that he had no intention of harming a mother who was driving her son to school.

30-year-old Colon Lowery III was arraigned in 25th District Court on Wednesday and charged as a habitual offender with felonious assault.

Lowery tells Action News that he was just trying to get to work on time when the event unfolded on the morning of Sept. 28.

According to Lincoln Park police, the incident started when Lowery almost struck a woman’s vehicle at the intersection of Lafayette Boulevard and Southfield Road. She rolled down her window and yelled at Lowery to be careful. She told police Lowery then made an improper lane change and passed her and repeatedly braked in front of her. She said Lowery then intentionally rammed his car into hers after he veered right and swerved back left.

Lowery said he was angry after the woman yelled at him, and that he yelled profanities back at her. He said the woman then tailgated him as both drivers continued on Lafayette.  He said he was making a u-turn when the woman tried to pass him and the two collided.

Police arrived at the scene a short time later. Lowery said he did not get a chance to tell police his side of the story.

“They didn’t want to hear anything I wanted to say. They told me to turn around, put my hands behind my back,” Lowery said.

He added, “From this accident and this verbal altercation, she’s making it seem like I’m this crazy lunatic out here, just ramming cars, while she has her kid in the car.”

Lowery was released on bond and he said he will be fighting the charges. He is due back in court Oct. 13.
