Westland police went above and beyond to help an elderly woman who couldn't pay her rent.
Erna, who just celebrated her 90th birthday, had paid her rent on time every month since 2002, according to the police department's Community Partnership Facebook page.
She recently missed her first payment, and someone alerted police because they thought she may have been the victim of a financial scam.
Westland police investigated and found out no crime was committed. There had been an error with her finances that caused her to miss her rent payment. However, police realized she was still in need of financial help, so the sergeant who investigated took her to the Senior Resources Department at the Friendship Center.
The sergeant worked with the Senior Resources Director to find a solution for Erna.
Within just a few days, the Senior Resources Director had contacted several community members and organizations and raised enough money to help Erna pay her rent.
The Facebook post said, "This situation is a prime example of Police intervention, interdepartmental collaboration, and community coming together to make great things happen!"
