LIVE BLOG: Suspect in carjacking, armed robbery & kidnapping is dead, police say

8:00 a.m.

Police say the suspect in carjackings, a kidnapping and shooting that started in Northville and Canton and ended on Detroit's east side is dead.

The situation lasted just under 11 hours after starting around 9 p.m. in Canton. 

The situation began in the Salvation Army parking lot on Joy Road in Canton. A woman was shot outside the building. She is in stable condition.

The suspect the allegedly carjacked a woman at a Northville CVS and kidnapped her, before dropping her off in Highland Park after a crash.

We're told the suspect stole another vehicle, which was located near 7 Mile and Woodward on Detroit's west side.

Around 5:30 a.m., the suspect tried to carjack what was determined to be an undercover Michigan State Police trooper and exchanged fire with the suspect. The trooper was not hit.

Michigan State Police and other agencies were able to set up a perimeter and eventually the suspect was killed.

Around 7:15 a.m., 7 Action News Reporter Matthew Smith reported hearing a number of gunshots in the area. It's not clear how the suspect died. 

6:51 a.m.

Michigan State Police say the suspect in carjackings, a kidnapping and shooting across metro Detroit also tried to kidnap an undercover Michigan State Police officer.

Around 5:30 a.m., MSP detectives were able to track the suspect to the area of Roseberry and Wilfred in Detroit. The suspect tried to carjack one of the undercover officers in the area and both the suspect and trooper exchanged gunfire.

The trooper was not hit, but it is unknown if the suspect was hit.

He fled into a neighborhood near Gratiot and Outer Dr. on the city's east side, and officers formed a perimeter around him.

Right now, troopers from the emergency support team are clearing the neighborhood where the suspect was last seen. They are asking the public to avoid the area as he is considered armed and dangerous.

Michigan State Police say they are continuing to search for the suspect in the carjackings, kidnapping and shooting across metro Detroit in the area of Gratiot and Outer Dr. on the city's east side.

Police say they have exchanged gunfire with the suspect and they are asking people to avoid the area.

6 a.m.

Detroit police have located one of the stolen vehicles they believe are connected to the carjackings, shooting and kidnapping in Northville and Canton Township earlier today.

The Chevy Cruze was found at a gas station near 7 Mile and Woodward on Detroit's west side.

Earlier in the morning, Michigan State Police say they were tracking the suspect on foot near Gratiot and Outer Dr. on the city's east side.

The suspect is a black male, about 50 years old, 5-feet-10 inches tall weighing 170 pounds. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with a green jacket.

He is armed and dangerous and has fired at police officers.

It appears the suspect is pinned down on the city's east side.

5:15 a.m.

Michigan State Police say the suspect of the manhunt on Detroit's east side is also the suspect wanted in connection to the shooting, carjackings and kidnappings in Canton Township and Northville. According to police, they don't know the identity of the suspect.

A perimeter has been set up and the MSP Special Response Team is on scene.

MSP says they are tracking the suspect on foot in the area of Roseberry and Wilfred, near Gratiot and Outer Dr. in Detroit. The suspect is a black male, about 50 years old, 5-feet-10 inches tall weighing 170 pounds. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with a green jacket.

The most recent carjacked vehicle has been tracked by OnStar and appears to have been located in the area of the Forest Lawn Cemetery on Detroit's east side.

3:50 a.m.

Northville Twp. Police have reopened intersection near Five Mile Rd. and Sheldon Rd. where a crash happened.  Natural gas service will be interrupted through the morning.  The businesses on the north east corner are the only meters affected.

1:00 a.m.

Police have lifted the shelter in place that was in place for parts of Northville and Canton. They say it is no longer necessary, because the suspect is believed to be in the Detroit/Highland Park area.

However, the intersection of Five Mile Road and Sheldon remains closed as crews deal with a gas leak.

12:17 a.m.

Highland Park police confirm to 7 Action News that the situation has now moved into their jurisdiction, as the suspect is believed to have dropped a kidnaped woman off in that city.

The woman was kidnaped from a Northville CVS near a crash scene.

The suspect is still on the run.

Police in Northville and Canton are telling people to stay in their homes as they search for a suspect in an armed robbery/carjacking who is considered to be armed and dangerous.

The search is centered in the area of Sheldon Road, between Five Mile Road and Six Mile Road.

That's where the suspect crashed following a chase. He is believed to be involved in two carjackings.

The situation began around 9:00 p.m. in at the Salvation Army on Joy Road in Canton. A woman was shot outside the building. She is in stable condition.

The suspect is believed to be on foot. He is described as an African American, around 50-years-old, 5'10" tall, about 170 pounds,wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and a green jacket..

Michigan State Police are also involved in the search.
