"It was very scary," says Robert Giacomantonio after a coyote attacked his dog, Marley, near their home on Grosse Ile.
Marley survived and so did another dog that was recently attacked. While the township has been using professional trappers for about two years, they are now setting traps in three areas instead of just one.
The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) prohibits the hunting and trapping of coyotes on Grosse Ile, but since allowing the township to hire professional trappers, 40 coyotes have been caught in snare traps and destroyed by the trapper.
Grosse Ile Township Supervisor Brian Loftus is urging citizens to curb the feeding of wildlife on their property because that only invites other wildlife which attracts hungry coyotes.
Citizens who see coyotes on their property should report it to the Grosse Ile Police Department.
