Richard Hathaway has been named as the new Wayne County Treasurer. He replaces longtime treasurer Raymond Wojtowicz who retired December 1 after nearly forty years in the office.
A three-person panel made the decision to appoint Hathaway today after a process that involved interviews with candidates last month. Those interviews were open to the public.
The position of treasurer is normally an elected role and Hathaway will serve until the November 2016 election.
The panel that selected the new treasurer was made up of Wayne County Clerk Cathy Garrett, Prosecutor Kym Worthy, and Chief Probate Judge Freddie Burton Jr.
Currently, Hathaway serves as Worthy's "Chief Assistant" in the prosecutor's office. He previously served the county as a judge for more than 20 years.
The job of Wayne County Treasurer involves more than simply looking over the county's finances. In recent years, the foreclosure crisis has become a big focus of the office which runs auctions to sell properties whose owners are delinquent on their taxes.
