Remains of WWII veteran from Michigan discovered, visitation held today

A WWII veteran who died overseas will finally be laid to rest.

A police escort brought the remains of Second Lt. Donald E. Underwood for in-state visitation at Michigan Memorial Funeral Home. 

Underwood is a River Rouge native who was killed in January, 1944 during WWII. He was aboard a U.S. bomber when it crashed during take-off from the Gilbert Islands. 

His remains were recently discovered with others on Betio Island 73 years after that crash. 

The family will hold a visitation Friday November 24, 2017,  from 1- 8 PM at Michigan Memorial Funeral Home  at 30895 W. Huron River Dr in Flat Rock.

A mass Saturday at St. Mary Magdalen Church at 11 AM 19624 Wood St, Melvindale, MI in and then he will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
