ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (WXYZ) — The Rochester Hills Fire Department is about to get more firefighters after a federal grant. The department said it was received the SAFER grant from FEMA for nearly $1.6 million to hire eight new firefighters.

The grant will pay for the entire salary for the new firefighters for the first four years, and over the next four years there are percentages the grant pays for. SAFER stands for Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response.

A press conference was held with Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett, the fire chief and more.

Fire Chief Sean Canto said thegrant is "historical” for the future of the fire department.
