Hackers target fast food giant Burger King's Twitter account

(WXYZ) - It appears as if Burger King is the latest victim of hackers.

The fast food giant's Twitter account was taken over shortly after noon on Monday. The first tweet posted after the takeover said "We just got sold to McDonalds! Look for McDonalds in a hood near you."

Burger King's Twitter page has since been changed to represent the supposed "purchase." It was soon posting under the McDonalds' name and a picture for McDonalds' Fish McBites, one of that company's newest products.

The description of the account also said "Just got sold to McDonalds because the whopper flopped =[ FREDOM IS FAILURE" It also appeared to show a link to the McDonalds homepage and the Twitter icon was changed to the Golden Arches symbol of McDonalds.

It's not clear who hacked the account, but they posted a tweet saying "Everybody follow us!" with a reference to one of the Twitter accounts used by the hacker "group" Anonymous. It also referenced the hashtag #OpMadCow.

The Anonymous Twitter account also responded to the hacking of the Burger King Twitter account, tweeting "We're guessing the @BurgerKing social media team is having a bad day...".

The hacking did not go unnoticed online. BuzzFeed News, a website that follows social media happenings, says the Burger King Twitter account gained almost 15,000 followers in the first hour that is was hacked.

The account continued to gain followers and soared from 86,000 followers to 107,000 followers by the time Twitter suspended the account at 1:17 pm.
