Twitter celebrates 7th birthday with YouTube video

(WXYZ) - Happy 7th Birthday Twitter!

The social media giant turns one year older today. And since we're pretty fond of the number seven, we thought we'd join the celebration.

It was March 21, 2006 when Twitter founder Jack Dorsey sent his first tweet saying simply, "just setting up my twttr."

Today, Twitter posted a YouTube video thanking their over 200 million active users who "send more than 400 million Tweets every day."

Those 200 million users turned Twitter from a simple social media site to a global town hall and worldwide media outlet.

In 2007 we saw the introduction of hashtags and retweets.

In 2009 photos surfaced of US Flight 1549 floating in the Hudson, after it was struck down by a flock of geese.

Twitter has given us a behind-the scenes peek into the world of mega celebrities like @Oprah and @Shaq.

It's even launched us into space, "From orbit: Launch was awesome!! I am feeling great, working hard & enjoying the  magnificent views, the adventure of a lifetime has begun" @Astro_Mike.

In 2010 Twitter united a global audience through sport via the World Cup in South Africa.

And on #Jan25, 2011 the world watched the civil unrest and uprising of Egyptian citizens come to life in Tahrir Square.

Just a few months later we saw devastating aftermath photos of Japan's earthquake and tsunami. And watched as users organized relief efforts.

Since then Twitter has broadcasted the London Games, the 2012 US Presidential Election and countless other world events, too numerous to name.

To that, Twitter says "We can't wait to see what you tweet next."

What memory, story or event to remember most from Twitter in the past 7 years? Share it by using the hashtag #Twitter7.
