Senator Gary Peters (D-Mich.) is calling for a special investigator to probe possible Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Peters spoke to 7 Action News following the firing of former FBI Director James Comey.

"We cannot wait for the President to hand pick a new FBI Director who will owe his or her nomination for this unexpected job opening to the very people he or she will charged with investigating," Peters said.

The Senator said he wants a special prosecutor to conduct a nonpartisan investigation as soon as possible.

"Director Comey was investigating this potential collusion at the time he was fired, and it has been reported that he recently asked Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein for an increase in money and personnel for this very investigation," he said.

In a letter, four U.S. senators from the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee sent a letter to the Department of Justice calling for an inquiry into possible political interference with the FBI investigation.

"The Attorney General’s recommendation and the President’s decision to remove Mr. Comey in the midst of the FBI’s most sensitive criminal investigation threatens the integrity of the Department of Justice and poses grave injury to the rule of law," the Senators wrote.
