OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. (WXYZ) — The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office is kicking off Women's Self-Defense Awareness Month with classes Thursday.

The Sheriff's Office has teamed up with the Miss Michigan America Organization, the IGroup Model and Talent Agency, Oakland County Parks and Recreation and Canterbury Village to present the awareness month in Oakland County during September and October.

The program officially launches Sept. 10 at 2 p.m. at the Sheriff’s Office Headquarters. The demonstration will cover some of the key self-defense techniques that women will learn in the class.

The free classes will be held on seven different dates in September and October at a number of different outdoor venues in partnership with Oakland County Parks and Recreation and Canterbury Village.

Lieutenant Jen Miles, a Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) trained instructor, from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, will lead each session.

Registrations will be taken on a first-come first served basis through Sign-Up Genius.

Covid screenings, face coverings and physical distance during the class will be required due to the ongoing pandemic.

Class sizes will also be limited due to outdoor gathering capacity restrictions.
