(WXYZ) — Take it slow on the roads Tuesday morning if you have to go out. A major snowstorm that started on Monday night and continues to fall early Tuesday morning is causing hazardous conditions on roads throughout the area.

As of midnight, more than 7 inches of snow had already fallen at Detroit Metro Airport, a record. It also caused more than 300 schools to close.

As plows and salt trucks continue to try and make the roads as safe as possible, Michigan State Police want people to keep the following things in mind.

– Slow down
– Leave enough room between you and the car in front of you so you don't have to slam on your brakes
– Clear all the snow off your car
– Have an extra coat and other winter gear with you

Of course, if you don't have to be on the roads, avoid it. Many people were off work on Monday due to President's Day, something MDOT was happy about because it allowed their crews to work with less traffic.

If you're able to work from home on Tuesday or avoid a trip to the office, do so.
