BRUCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) — Macomb County prosecutors have charged a Bruce Township man with second degree murder in the death of his mother.

On March 29, state troopers and EMS were dispatched to a home in Bruce Township, where the lifeless body of a 63-year-old woman was discovered inside. The victim's son, 42-year-old Christopher Castillo, was in the home huddled over his mother's body, police say. He lived with his mother.

Police and prosecutors allege that Castillo and his mother were drinking heavily on the night of March 28, when a domestic altercation began between the two.

Castillo then started violently beating his mother with a bat, police say. The dispute appeared to have taken place in multiple rooms and at some point the bat was broken and hidden.

Authorities say "a significant amount of blood was immediately visible on the suspect."

The cause of death was blunt force trauma to head, torso and categorized the death as a homicide. The woman suffered nine broken ribs "with a tremendous amount of internal damage and injuries to the brain."

Castillo was arraigned Tuesday and denied bond. He is due back in court for a probable cause hearing on April 30 at 9 a.m.
