(WXYZ) — Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said every ballot will likely be tabulated by Friday of election week.

On Tuesday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation that would allow clerks one extra day to begin opening envelopes and preparing early ballots to be counted.

Although this is a step in the right direction, Benson said, it is not enough.

She said she has been concerned about the amount of absentee ballots expected to be counted in the election. She said at least seven days are needed for ballots to be pre-processed.

As of Tuesday, 2.7 million registered voters in Michigan have requested absentee ballots.

She asks that voters be patient as clerks work to carefully tabulate every ballot.
