(WXYZ) — Michigan has released its inspection report of the Edenville Dam.

Both the Edenville and Sanford dams failed on May 19, sending hundreds of thousands of gallons of water per second rushing over the dam, forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of people and leaving a path of destruction.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer directed the state's Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) to investigate the cause of the failures.

The report confirmed the dam's spillway did not meet state standards for the volume of water it would need to pass.

It also recommended more structural analysis. The dam was given a fair to poor condition assessment rating.

Notably, the report also said the dam was originally constructed in 1924 as a hydro-electric dam for Wolverine Power Corporation. It was not designed to be a flood control structure.
