MT. CLEMENS, Mich. (WXYZ) — A middle school student has been charged with making bomb threats to two Macomb County schools. According to a release, the student told police the threats were the result of a dare from her friend in an attempt to "copy-cat" recent Melvindale School threats.
The charge carries a four-year felony.
“As I have stressed time and time again, my office will remain vigilant, never underplaying the serious nature of such threats," Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith said. "Our children’s lives depend on it."
The suspect called L'Anse Creuse Middle School East on Sept. 18 at 1:18 p.m. from her home in Chesterfield Township. The student stated that there were multiple bombs located around the school. Police say she then used the Textnow app to hide her real phone number during the phone call and used a deeper voice in order to sound like a man.
The middle school student then called the school back shortly after and screamed into the phone that bombs were around the building.
The second school the student allegedly made a threat toward was Roseville Middle School. At 1:37 p.m., she stated that "There are bombs placed all around your school." Then the student called back at 1:48 p.m. to say, "You have 30 minutes," before hanging up.
When authorities and K9 units arrived at the schools, they didn't find any evidence of bombs on either campus.
The girl told police that the friend who dared her to make the calls was on the other line when the bomb threats were called in to the schools. Police say the two students weren't at school the day the threats were made because they were both on suspension.
