This is a story lots of people are talking about on social media - Jackets for Jackson - a group of young girls trying to make a big difference in the state after losing two of their loved ones - including a 4-year-old boy.
The teens are working hard to change Michigan law. They want to make sure no more families lose a loved one on the ice.
On February 1st, 4-year-old Jackson Lyons went ice fishing with his dad on Alderman Lake. Jackson fell through the ice and his dad, David, dove in after him. Both of them drowned.
Neither was wearing a life jacket, something family members believe may have saved their lives.
That’s what these girls want to change. They’ve started a nonprofit called Jackets for Jackson to raise awareness about ice safety. They also want Michigan law amended to require children under 12-years-old to wear a life jacket on the ice.
These girls aren’t slowing down until it’s written in black and white.
