PONTIAC, Mich. (WXYZ) — A 16-year-old girl is in stable condition following an officer-involved shooting in Oakland County Monday morning.
The shooting stemmed from a routine traffic stop where the driver of the vehicle involved – a 15-year-old boy – attempted fleeing police on foot with the vehicle still in motion.
The incident happened at 2:07 a.m. in Pontiac. Deputies with the Oakland County Sheriff's Department were investigating a drug-related arrest that was unrelated to the shooting. The drug investigation occurred in the area of Bagley and Arthur Avenue. While in the area, a deputy attempted to pull over a vehicle for a traffic-related offense, investigators say.
The vehicle, which was being driven by the 15-year-old boy, initially slowed down but then deputies say the young driver, who was unlicensed, proceeded to flee on foot from the vehicle.
A second deputy, who was in a marked patrol car and assisting with the drug-related arrest, positioned his patrol car to block the vehicle that the teen had just fled from. Also inside that vehicle was the 16-year-old female passenger and two other female passengers in the rear seat.
Investigators say the deputy exited the patrol car as the vehicle moved forward. The deputy pulled out a handgun and fired one shot into the car through the front windshield. The shot struck the 16-year-old passenger in the upper right clavicle. The deputy immediately rendered aid, investigators say.
Further investigation revealed that the 15-year-old driver was unlicensed and took the vehicle without the owner's permission. The two passengers in the rear of the vehicle were not injured.
The 16-year-old girl is in stable condition at a local hospital as the incident remains under investigation.
