DETROIT (AP) — Temporary dams are planned for parts of Detroit’s east side to prevent neighborhood and basement flooding caused by rising water levels in the Detroit River.

Installation of the dams is expected to start this week along the river and canal seawalls, city officials said.

The $2 million preventative measure was approved by the Detroit Board of Water Commissioners to protect the city’s combined sewer system from being overwhelmed and to prevent pump failure during wet weather events.

City crews along with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and subcontractors are expected to install the dams by May 1.

Nearly seven billion gallons of river and storm water flowed last year into the treatment facility at Connor Creek.

“Last year, we had to react to the canal waters flooding streets and property,” said Gary Brown, director of Detroit’s Water and Sewerage Department. “This year we are being very proactive to make sure we have protection in place long before the river crests.”
