Third suspect arrested in carjacking of off-duty Harper Woods officer in Detroit

DETROIT (WXYZ) — A third suspect who was allegedly involved in the carjacking of an off-duty Harper Woods officer at a Detroit gas station has been arrested, according to authorities.

On Aug. 13, police were on the search for three suspects in the carjacking. One of the suspects was arrested shortly after the carjacking. A second suspect, Kyle Cherry, 22, was involved in a pursuit with police where shots were fired at officers.

The third suspect, Raymond Stewart, 41, was arrested Monday evening n the 1200 block of Weddel in Taylor.

The carjacking happened around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13 in the area of Clark and West Fort Street.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said officers from the 4th precinct were patrolling the area when they saw the off-duty Harper Woods officer's vehicle and engaged in a short high-speed pursuit that ended in Melvindale. After a standoff, Cherry surrendered to police without incident.

No further information has been released on the most recent arrest. Paperwork is being submitted to the prosecutor's office for charges.
