It’s a family tradition that people living in Detroit look forward to the Monday before the fourth of July. Thousands of people are expected to see the sky light up with fireworks.

Some people put in extra work just to make it out to the island on Monday.

“I actually got the day off cause i did an extra shift so i just wanted to come out here,” said Vanessa Baker.

Baker is here with her daughter and grandson all spending time together.

“Well you should always spend time with your mom,” said Emarion Atley.

They are one of thousands of families making their way to Belle Isle, cars flooding the island around 2 p.m. Monday. There are only 3,000 parking spots available.

That’s why Evangelia Proctor made it out early with her 10-month-old son.

“I got to see them i got to get a good stop a lot of people come down here to see them,” said Proctor.

The fireworks start at 9:55 p.m. and everyone is asked to leave the island and soon as the fireworks are done.
