GENOA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) — Last year, we told you about Heavenly Acres Pet Cemetery in Genoa Township closing abruptly, and now, thousands of people are being told they need to exhume the remains of their pets from the cemetery or lose claim to them.
Helen, from Fraser, tells 7 Action News that she has seven former pets buried there. Of those, four belonged to her late mom who passed away from cancer.
"I'm hoping she's too busy playing with them in heaven to know what's happening here," she said.
The lease for the cemetery expired on Sept. 30, 2018, and it's believed that thousands of animal remains have been buried there over the past 40 years.
The owners of the pets tell 7 Action News that they will get a 3-4 hour time slot on one of nine predetermined days to come and exhume the remains.
One woman said that they want ample time to recover the animals, and to make matters worse, the property is in a state of neglect with overgrown grass and no markers.
