There's now a better idea of when the water might be safe to drink in Flint.

According to a letter from the federal government to the state, the rescaling or recoating of pipes is estimated to be done by May 1.

After additional testing for 3 more months, it will be determined whether the water is safe for consumption.

The rescaling will be done in addition to the removal of some of the pipes that are leaching lead into the water supply. This method has been approved by outside experts including Dr. Marc Edwards from Virginia Tech.

In the same letter, FEMA is approving the state's request for more help. FEMA will continue to supply bottled water, filters and test kits to Flint's 100,000 residents through August 14.

But this will be the last extension of help from FEMA.
