The Troy Police Department is looking for sponsors to help residents in need during the upcoming holiday season for Operation Blue Sleigh.
Operation Blue Sleigh consists of a food and gift drive along with an "adopt a family" program benefiting Troy residents in need.
“As police officers, we see how the holidays can be particularly hard for families in need,” said Chief Frank Nastasi. “Operation Blue Sleigh gives us the opportunity to connect donors with people in need in the community, and also allows us to serve the community in a different way.”
The department said sponsors can contribute by "adopting a family" or making a donation of cash or gift cards.
"Adopting a family" works by providing holiday gifts and foods to recipient families or individuals, which are delivered via "blue sleigh" by officers and volunteers before Christmas. Donors can also give cash or gift cards.
The program has been facilitated for 24 years. Recently, the department has undertaken more holiday outreach efforts that have benefited more than 50 families and raised in excess of $60,000 in goods and other donations.
Monetary donations can be made in the form of a check made out to Alliance Mobile Health. Checks can be dropped off at the Police Department, 500 W. Big Beaver Road.
The department will match sponsors and families in need. Those wishing to contribute should contact Officer Melissa Raymer, raymerma@troymi.gov, 248.680.7223 by Nov. 26, 2018, at the latest.
