WAYNE COUNTY (WXYZ) — Locally, there are several programs available for veterans to help with anything from housing to food, to car repairs.

Kwesi Betserai, veteran services director for Wayne County, spoke with 7 Action News about the help that's available to our veterans in metro Detroit, and how the pandemic has impacted the veteran community this year.

Betserai outlined the assistance available to Wayne County veterans who were honorably discharged, and served during war-time or peace-time.

That assistance includes:

  • rent payments
  • mortgage payments
  • car repairs
  • car note
  • furniture
  • food
  • work uniforms
  • moving expenses
  • first month's rent deposit
  • utility bills
  • property taxes, even back payments as far back as three years

To access these programs, call 1-833-WAY-VETS.

"Since COVID-19 has seriously impacted our nation, we've been taking all of our services online," Betserai said.

Those who want to apply will receive a check list to determine their eligibility.

The pandemic has affected veterans locally, from access to health resources and even housing, by Betserai says there are still options out there.

"Because of COVID-19 a lot of veterans who need some counseling , they have not been making their appointments," Betserai said. "But the VA is taking clients online, they're doing it virtually just like a Zoom. So I'm asking all my veteran brothers and sisters to please make those appointments."

The Wayne County Veteran Services has stepped in to help vets displaced by the pandemic who have lost housing. They've even focused even more on mortgage payments and car notes to help those struggling during this time.

Betserai also encourages veterans to reach out these following veteran social services agencies for assistance:
The American Legion
