Families who are still working to get their medical malpractice money after a metro Detroit doctor wrongfully diagnosed them with cancer are now getting a little help.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says more than 500 people were impacted by Dr. Farid Fata's actions. They underwent treatment for radiation and chemotherapy they never needed, all while Fata collected their insurance money.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says many of these patients have been overwhelmed by the filing process to claim their money.

So today, the office is announcing a new way to streamline the process and get these patients the money they need.

The filing deadline is October 5.

We expect more information on this new process later today.
