WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) — Police are investigating a fatal crash that shut down lanes on M-53 in Washington Township Sunday.

On Dec. 1 around 10 a.m., Macomb County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a single vehicle crash on M-53 and 26 Mile Rd.

Witnesses reported that the blue Jeep Cherokee was traveling southbound on M-53, north of 26 Mile Rd when it left the roadway at a high rate of speed, police say. The vehicle traveled through the median and then struck a pole and caught fire. The Washington Township Fire department responded and extinguished the vehicle.

Police believe the vehicle was occupied by only one person who did not survive the crash.

Both northbound and southbound M-53 between 26 Mile and 30 Mile Roads remain closed at this time.

Drivers and pedestrians are asked to avoid the area until the investigation is complete.
