DETROIT (WXYZ) — A tweet by the men's head basketball coach at Oakland University is going viral on Twitter and could change a man's life.
Greg Kampe said he ran into a homeless man in Midtown Detroit that he initially didn't recognize.
"I'm really cold my hands are freezing can you help me," Kampe said the man yelled out to him.
Kampe who is an avid walker was making his way through Midtown and downtown Detroit.
He said the man recognized him first and reminded him that he worked as an usher at Little Caesars Arena.
"I can't tell you how happy he was just to have a conversation," Kampe continued.
He said the conversation was gut-wrenching and opened his eyes to the desperate situations everyday people are facing amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sports stadiums have basically been emptied except for essential personnel.
A University of Michigan study published in May said more than 4 in 10 Detroiters have lost jobs during the pandemic.
"I have had people reach out to me and try to go and find him," Kampe said. "We'll find him and we are going to do everything to get him back on his feet."
A team at LCA is also hoping to find the man. Kampe said he helped him out the best he could but did not disclose what he gave the man. He's hoping the tweet will inspire others to reach out to people facing hard times because of the pandemic.
