(WXYZ) — If you missed your chance last time, don't worry!

Applications are now open again to be part of the Tawas Point Lighthouse Keeper Program.

For $75 per person, lighthouse keepers are given two weeks of lodging in the second-story quarters of the historic light keeper's dwelling, overlooking the shores of Lake Huron.

Accommodations include two bedrooms, a fully-equipped kitchen, shower and bath, along with free parking.

Primary responsibilities include greeting visitors, giving tours and providing information about the lighthouse and Tawas area. Additionally, keepers will perform basic facility maintenance like sweeping floors, removing trash, cleaning bugs off windows, sweeping outdoor walkways and thoroughly cleaning living quarters.

The program will take place from May 6 through Oct. 7.

Those who apply must be willing to provide tours five days a week, Thursday - Monday, totaling 30 hours per week. They should be comfortable speaking to the public, in good health, and able to climb the 85-step lighthouse tower as part of daily tours. Other requirements include:

  • Serving two consecutive weeks
  • Provide your own food, toiletries and linens
  • Pass a background check
  • Not be a DNR employee

All lighthouse keepers selected to participate will be asked to attend a training session presented by DNR staff at Tawas Point State Park on Saturday, April 25.
