WARREN, Mich. (WXYZ) — A man was taken into custody in Toledo in connection with the murder of his 68-year-old grandmother has been shot and killed by police in the Toledo police station.

Twenty-three-year-old Damon Barstad reportedly tried to grab an officer's gun in the cell block area. He was shot and killed by officers.

Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer identified the grandson to 7 Action News. He describe the Warren woman's murder as "extremely brutal."

She had been missing since Saturday. Police went to her home and eventually found her body in a recycling trash bin along with two knives. The cause of death has not yet been determined, but the victim did have neck stab wounds, police say.

The suspect reportedly took off in a GMC Terrain and was arrested outside of an inn in Toledo, Ohio.
