(WXYZ) — One person was killed as hundreds of people gathered at a large protest in downtown Detroit on Friday night.

The protest was part of nationwide gatherings after the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis earlier this week.

Detroit police say one person was killed at the protest when someone drove up in a gray Dodge Durango and opened fire on the crowd.

Police pushed the protesters back in the city with tear gas and several people were detained as the protests stretch past 1 a.m. Saturday.

At earlier protests, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said nine people were arrested, seven of whom were from outside of the city.

The Detroit protests and another in Washtenaw County were after the killing of Floyd and after video earlier this week showed the violent arrest of Daniyal Ka Rhi Grady El and his wife, Sha-teina Anahita Lin Grady El, in Washtenaw County.

In that case, video shows a deputy punching Sha-teina. That deputy has now been placed on administrative leave.

Early Tuesday morning, deputies were investigating a nearby shooting and said they obtained information that the suspect might be inside the home of Sha'Teina and Daniyal Grady El.

"Produce your warrant," Mrs. Grady El told deputies who were trying to get her daughter to open the door.

It was a short time later that deputies are accused of crossing the line as they placed the couple under arrest.

On cell phone video taken by a bystander, one of the deputies is seen punching Mrs. Grady El several times. And when her husband tries to help her, another deputy uses a Taser on him.
