DEARBORN, Mich. (WXYZ) — Dearborn police are warning residents about a wave of catalytic converters being stolen from vehicles.

A catalytic converter is an emissions control part that makes gases and pollutants in exhaust less toxic before they leave the vehicle. The converters are located on the underside of vehicles as part of the exhaust system.

Police say thieves are crawling underneath vehicles and are removing the catalytic converter by cutting it off of the vehicle. The thieves are reportedly targeting Honda Civics from 2004-2006 model years. Police say the thefts seem to be occurring betwen 5 a.m. and 7 a.m.

Residents are asked to keep an eye out for any suspicious subjects near vehicles.

To protect their vehicles, Dearborn police say residents can do the following:

  • Park in well-lit areas
  • Park close to building entrances or the nearest road in parking lots
  • Keep your car parked inside the garage with the door shut
  • Add video surveillance to the area where you regularly park your car
  • Use a vehicle security system
  • Report any suspicious activity in your neighborhood to the police by calling 911
