Police say it began as a domestic dispute on Detroit's southwest side and ended with a woman allegedly shooting her neighbor's boyfriend. Now the woman is in custody and police are trying to figure out if she was justified in firing her gun.
Theresa Lehman says trouble first began when her daughter Tonya tried to help a neighbor who was fighting with her boyfriend. Police say they were initially called to the home around 4 a.m. because of the domestic dispute and took the boyfriend to the hospital for a head wound.
"Later he decides to leave the hospital after he’s treated and returns to the scene. He’s upset with our shooter for intervening in the original argument," says Captain Darrell Patterson with the Metropolitan Division of the Detroit Police Department.
He says the man allegedly threw a rock thru Tonya's window breaking it.
"At that point the shooter comes out of her home with a long gun and shoots him from her front porch in the leg. She then advances on him and shoots him again in that same leg," says Patterson.
Police initially believed the shooter had barricaded herself in her home, but Theresa says her daughter fled to a friend's house because she was scared.
"I told her to come home and turn herself in and that’s what she did," says Theresa.
She believes her daughter acted in self defense. Police say she has a history of violent encounters.
The man with gun shot wounds to his leg is expected to recover. The suspected shooter was taken into custody as police determine whether she fired her weapon in self defense.
