DETROIT — As kids head back to school in new and different ways, it’s more important than ever that we don’t forget about the importance books play in the lives of children.

That’s why WXYZ is giving away thousands of books to metro Detroit children. Through the generosity of WXYZ staff, the Scripps Howard Foundation, and viewers, “If You Give A Child A Book” campaign will get two books into the hands of 1,400 school children.

On Wednesday, September 2, WXYZ distributed the books to children during a drive-by Back to School Fair at Matrix Human Services in Detroit.

Families were also able to pick up 1,000 essential needs packages (formula, diapers, wipes, masks and etc..).

7 Action News Anchor Carolyn Clifford and WXYZ-TV General Manager Mike Murri distributed the books to children and their families.

Festivities like music and ice cream for children and their families provided a backdrop for the distribution of thousands of books and essential needs packages.

Students that were not able to pick up their books Wednesday will receive their two books on the first day of school.

Reading and having access to books can change a child’s life. A child living in poverty who can’t read at grade level by 3rd grade is four times less likely to graduate from high school.
