WXYZ DETROIT — Summer vacation is winding down. It's time for students and adults to prepare for getting back-to-school. We encourage you to use these final days to get your child off to a good start. There are specific things we can all do help make the school year successful.

Here are some suggestions from the U.S. Department of Education. Walk or ride the route your child will take to school. Provide yourself and your child with a comfort level of safety. Attend parent teacher conferences and be engaged in your child's education. Purchase the kind of supplies they'll need for the year. If finances are an issue, check with your local school district to get a list of non-profit organizations prepared to help.

Identify a quiet, clean and consistent place where your child can do his or her homework. Set rules for TV and mobile device time and, if possible, make it a family affair. Begin getting children back on a school year-like sleep schedule. Proper rest is essential for learning. Provide your kids with healthy and balanced meals. And if you need assistance, find out if your family qualifies for any child nutrition programs. Educators recommend an annual physical and eye exam for your youngster. Also, it's very important to read to your child 20 minutes every day. This reinforces the importance of literacy and encourages kids to explore the world through books.

Finally, support and respect teachers and administrators who work hard yearlong to provide a creative learning environment. All these steps together will greatly help Michigan in our quest to become one of America's Top 10 educational states.
