WXYZ DETROIT — It’s 2020 and time to look ahead. A new year always brings new hopes and opportunities. We urge our government, business and civic leaders to work collaboratively to address important issues facing this city and state.

Our infrastructure remains a top challenge for this year. Lansing lawmakers have been elected to help find a bi-partisan solution that will greatly improve the condition of our crumbling roads and bridges. Michiganders deserve better! They should not be forced to endure potholed roads, aging water pipes and dangerous street overpasses, as a normal way of life.

Recent reports have signaled a warning sign for educational growth in Michigan. How we fund our school systems, teach our students, pay our educators and prepare our future workforce are crucial questions. We can’t become a top 10 education state if we aren’t competitive on all fronts.

Other top priorities for this year should include how we apply the new auto insurance reform law, online sports betting and Michigan’s quickly growing cannabis industry. Sales from medical marijuana and recreational marijuana are expected to reach $1 billion annually.

Improving regional transit should also remain a top issue. Businesses - large and small - tell us it’s a must for attracting and retaining top talented workers.

Together, let’s strive to make Michigan the model state in America for bi-partisan cooperation and political civility.
