WXYZ was honored with a Salute to Excellence Award from the National Association of Black Journalists at the NABJ’s annual convention and career fair in Florida on Saturday.
The award was given to the Bounce Detroit special, “Spotlight on the News: Inside Michigan’s African American Vote,” in the television top 15 market category for public affairs interview/discussion. The show was produced and hosted by WXYZ and WMYD Editorial and Community Affairs Director, Chuck Stokes.
The NABJ awards honor exemplary coverage of African-Americans and highlight the work of media organizations and individuals involved in digital, print, television, radio, photojournalism, podcasting and public relations/marketing categories. WXYZ’s winning entry aired in October and explored the issues voters were facing in the election and the role the African American vote might have on the future of Michigan.
“We are so proud to receive this national recognition from the NABJ for the “Spotlight on the News: Inside Michigan’s African American Vote special,” said Mike Murri, WXYZ and WMYD vice president and general manager. “The show was an innovative approach to create relevant content for our viewers. We’re so honored to receive this award for our work on this important local Bounce TV special.”
The show included conversations with political experts, award-winning journalists, civil rights activists, religious leaders and the leaders of Michigan’s Democratic and Republican parties.
